JACKSON POLLOCK E-mail

Saturday is the birthday of JACKSON POLLOCK, who was born on

January 28, 1912, in Cody, Wyoming. (Died 1956).   Pollock

created a technique called “Drip Painting.”  With canvases

laid out on the floor, he applied paint without mixing or the

use of brushes.  He was a major influence in the Abstract

Expressionist movement.  In 1945, he married the artist Lee Krasner.

MATISSE E-mail

Matisse, when speaking about a tree and not copying

nature, said "I shan't get free of my emotion by copying the tree

faithfully, or by drawing its leaves one by one, but only after

identifying myself with it.  I have to create an object which resembles

the tree ... The truly original artist invents his own signs.  The importance

of an artist is to be measured by the number of new signs he has

introduced into the language of art."

CUBISM E-mail

Cubism was invented in Paris in the early 20th Century by PICASSO

and BRAQUE.  Unlike any kind of painting previously known, the

artists fragmented natural forms into abstract motifs, which were

objects in their own right.
