Birthday Greetings to HANS HOFMANN who was born on

March 21, 1880 in Bavaria and died in 1966 in NYC, age 85. 

Hofmann, the legendary artist and teacher, was known for his

abstract expressionist art and his influence on a generation of

painters.  He stated "the ability to simplify means to eliminate

the unnecessary, so that the necessary may speak."

Happy 201st Birthday to GEORGE CALEB BINGHAM who

was born on March 20, 1811 in Virginia (died 1879, age 68).

Bingham was best known for his paintings of American life

in the frontier lands along the Missouri River, and is one of

America's greatest painters.  He was a self-taught artist.

Happy Birthday to JOSEF ALBERS who was born on

March 19, 1888, in Germany  (died 1976 in New Haven, CT). 

Albers was an accomplished designer, photographer, typographer,

printmaker, and poet.  He is primarily known for his abstract

paintings and prints, and his series "Homage to the Square."

From 1950-1958, he headed the Department of Design at

Yale University, and then retired from teaching.

MICHELANGELO was born 537 years ago today

on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Italy.  Michelangelo di Lodovico

Buonarroti Simoni was not only the prolific Renaissance painter,

he was also a sculptor, architect, and poet.  He is best known for

his fresco painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at the

Vatican in Rome, and his outstanding sculptures David and Pieta.

He died in Rome on February 18, 1564 at the age of 89.

(March 1, 1886 - February 22, 1980), the Austrian artist known

for his expressionist landscapes and portraits.  He developed

his artistic style from the art of past masters, and differentiated

himself from the main movements of 20th Century modernism.

Happy Birthday wishes to PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR,

who was born 171 years ago today on February 25, 1841

in Limoges, France.  His paintings are well known for their

beauty, happiness, and composure.

     In his later years, he was affected by severe arthritis, and the

pain would interrupt his painting.  He died in Provence, France

on December 17, 1919.

WINSLOW HOMER was born on February 24, 1836

in Boston, MA.  He was not only one of America's greatest

oil painters, but was also a spectacular watercolorist.

Homer was best noted for his boating scenes, as well as

his outdoor depictions of hunting and fishing.

He died at his home in Prouts Neck, ME on September 29, 1910
