EGON SCHIELE was born 122 years ago in Austria

near the Danube River (June 12, 1890).  In 1907 he had

met Gustav Klimt who mentored Schiele and other

artists.  Schiele's paintings often depicted the human form,

and also human sexuality.  His art also was influenced

by Edvard Munch and Vincent Van Gogh.  On October 31,

1918 he died in Vienna at the age of 28 from influenza.

Birthday Wishes to RAOUL DUFY who was born

June 3, 1877 in Normandy, France.  Dufy was well

known for painting cheerful oils and watercolors,

depicting current events, such as yatching scenes, views

of the Riviera, festive parties, and musical events.

He was influenced by impressionist landscape painters,

such as Claude Monet and Camille Pisarro.

On March 24, 1953 he died in France at the age of 76.

Happy Birthday to GEORGES ROUAULT who was born on

May 27, 1871 in Paris, France.  Rouault was first known for

painting religious subjects and landscapes and later painted

courts, clowns, and prostitutes in the Expressionism style.

In 1958, he died in Paris at the age of 87.

It was 168 years ago that MARY CASSATT was born

in Pennsylvania (May 2, 1844).  In the later part of the

1800's, she was one of the most prominent artists in the

Impressionist movement.  She moved to Paris, where she

lived for the rest of her life, befriending Edgar Degas.  Due

to poor eyesight after 1910, Mary no longer did serious painting.

She died on June 14, 1926 at the age of 82.

Happy Birthday to JASPER JOHNS who was born on

May 15, 1930 in Augusta, Georgia.  In the early 1950's,

Johns was best known for painting simple objects such as

flags and targets which incorporated mixed media to create

highly detailed art.  In 1990, the National Medal of Arts was

awarded to him.

was Impressionism, but by 1908 he evolved his works, which

now reflected the new style, Cubism.  On August 13, 1963,

New York City - EDVARD MUNCH's "THE SCREAM" sold at auction

on Wednesday, May 2.  The painting is one of the four versions by

the Norweigan expressionist artist created between 1893 and 1910.

The sales price of $119.9 million is an auction record for any work

of art.  No details about the buyer were released.  In 1910, a painting

by Picasso sold for $106,5 million, setting the previous record.

Happy Birthday to GEORGE INNESS who was born on May 1, 1825

in New York State.  He received his education as a painter in both

the USA and Europe, particularly England, France, and Italy.

Inness was primarily famous for his panoramic and picturesque

landscapes.  He died while in Scotland in 1894.
